DescriptionThis piece fuses the tools of molecular biology and artificial intelligence to help understand the complex landscapes of soil biodiversity across California ecosystems: coast, shrub, and forest. The visual is based on a microbial dataset produced by the CALeDNA program. The samples were processed for environmental DNA-metabarcoding, which allows the characterization of the community composition across regions. A variation of Neural Cellular Automata was developed to visually express the biological mechanisms of single-cell growth self-assembling into complex organisms. The form and composition are determined by the interaction of bacterial phyla in a corresponding sample. Courtesy of the State of California.
