DescriptionPurpose of the job:
The FX Development Artist works closely with the FX lead and/or FX Supervisor as well FX
TDs. The purpose of this role is to develop high quality effects including rigid body and particle
dynamics, volume modeling and rendering, procedural geometry generation and fluid
dynamics for more complex show needs. Those setups will be used by both the FX
Development Artist themselves as well as by other FX Artists within the studio.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
● Design and animate high quality, photo-real effects (fire, smoke, explosions, debris,
clouds, magic, energy, etc) that meet all technical and aesthetic standards for the
project
● Work within the show structure and production deadlines to complete all tasks
● Work closely with Lighting Artists and Compositors to ensure all effects will work
smoothly within the show pipeline
● Produce look tests based on provided reference materials
● Take direction from FX Leads and FX TDs as well as provide guidance and mentorship
to other FX Artists
● Create setups for use by other artists when necessary including but not limited to:
● Developing the look and methodology for some of the most complicated, large
scale, and creatively driven effects for the project
● Create setups and OTLs for use by other artists
● Work to ensure the developed fx is procedural and robust enough to be run
throughout many shots on a given show
● Manage and support the setups and help guide artists using it, as well as problem
solve as specific issues arise during shot production
● Be able to create tools that work within the pipeline in order to streamline setups
and make them more easily accessible to the artists using them
Education and/or Experience Required:
● 7+ years experience as an FX Artist creating photo-real effects elements for feature
films
● Degree in Animation, Arts, Fine Arts or equivalent production experience
● Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or Mathematics a plus
● Expert knowledge of any/all of the following; rigid body and particle dynamics, volume
modeling and rendering, procedural geometry generation, and fluid dynamics
● Strong understanding of physical dynamics and natural phenomena
● Production experience working in Houdini is required
● Working experience with one or more other professional software packages such as
Maya, 3D Studio Max, or RealFlow is a plus
● Requires strong technical and communication skills within a show structure
● Firm understanding of effects production pipelines
● Python scripting is a plus
Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands:
● Office working environment
● Hours for this position are based on normal working hours but will require extra hours
pending production needs
● Walking/bending/sitting.
