DescriptionWe analyze the compactness of the integral radiance transport operator and prove that it is not compact — any discretization relying on a finite rank or light-agnostic finite basis is susceptible to unbounded error over arbitrary light distributions. We review existing rendering techniques and future directions, considering these theoretical results.
