Biography
Robert Patterson is an NCSA Center Affiliate, computer graphics visualization artist/designer, and was a member of the NCSA’s Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1989-2021). He collaborated with scientists, technologists and other artists to produce cinematic visualizations of scientific data and was Associate Director for Production, eDream Institute (Emerging Digital Research and Education in Arts Media). Patterson art directed and created virtual camera choreography for visualizations that appeared in IMAX 3D, feature film, broadcast television and fulldome planetarium productions. Patterson co-created Virtual Director, a virtual reality tool for interactively designing camera moves. He used Virtual Director and other technologies to collaboratively design immersive journeys through scientific data to inspire broad public audiences. Recent fulldome productions include “Atlas of a Changing Earth” (2021), “Birth of Planet Earth” (2019), “Solar Superstorms” (2015) and IMAX 3D “A Beautiful Planet” (2016), and “Hubble 3D” (2010).
