ACM SIGGRAPH Announces Colombian Andres Burbano as Chair of its 51st Annual Conference

CHICAGO—Andres Burbano, of Universidad de los Andes, has been selected as chair of the 51st annual SIGGRAPH conference by leadership within ACM SIGGRAPH. Burbano is a native of Pasto, Colombia and an associate professor in Universidad de los Andes’s School of Architecture and Design, where he has been on faculty since 2013.

As a contributor to the conference, Burbano has presented research within the Art Papers program (in 2017), and as a volunteer, has served on the SIGGRAPH 2018, 2020, and 2021 conference committees. Most recently, Burbano served as the first-ever chair of the Retrospective Program in 2021, which honored the history of computer graphics and interactive techniques.

“Andres is the definition of a professional with a true passion for the industry. His dedication to SIGGRAPH over the years truly represents a drive to bring opportunities to our community,” said SIGGRAPH Conference Advisory Group Chair Mikki Rose. “In his years as a media artist and media technology scholar, Andres has touched many countries — and continents — with his work. I am thrilled to see how he brings his global perspective to SIGGRAPH.”

Motivated by a drive to understand how media technologies have developed over time and their ties to artistic practice, Burbano has built an impressive career that spans research and artistic exhibitions on topics from the history of photography and media archaeology to climate change and information visualization. He holds a Ph.D. in media arts and technology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Burbano will follow SIGGRAPH 2023 Conference Chair Erik Brunvand of University of Utah.

“Designing a first-of-its-kind program for the conference in 2021 was thrilling and I cannot wait to take that energy into building the 51st SIGGRAPH,” shared Burbano. “I look forward to discovering new ways to celebrate the richness and complexity of our community as we shape the technological future worldwide.”

Look out for even more from Burbano in the year to come. His artistic and technical work has often been featured in publications like WIRED, Leonardo, and Artnodes, and his next book book, “Different Engines: Media Technologies from Latin America”, is due from Routledge later this year.

In addition to Burbano’s appointment as 2024 chair, ACM SIGGRAPH is pleased to announce that submissions are currently open for its 49th conference, SIGGRAPH 2022. Learn more about how to submit to the many open programs, including the Art Gallery, Panels, Labs, Production Sessions, and Immersive Pavilion.
